Apple confirms problems with Ethernet iMac and MacBook Pro after OS X update
A recent security update to OS X has disabled the Ethernet port on some iMac and MacBook Pro models. Apple recognizes the problem and has published a solution.
The problems came out through the forums of Macrumors and Reddit, among others. Apple users reported that they could no longer connect via the Ethernet port. The problems appeared to be caused by the following file, according to the log data: Incompatible Kernel Extension Configuration Data, with version number 3.28.1.
Apple has indicated that it is aware of the issues with this file, and has already released a new version, version number 3.28.2, according to a support page that Apple has posted online. The easiest way is to download the latest version via WiFi, but a step-by-step plan has also been published for those who do not have wireless internet on their device. This should bring the Ethernet connection up and running again, after which the software update can still be performed.
The exact cause of the problems is unknown. Although Apple has confirmed that the software update caused problems, no technical background has been released.
