Apple CarPlay gets nine more car manufacturers
Apple CarPlay, which integrates iOS with the computer system in the car, is being expanded to nine new car manufacturers. Alfa Romeo, Audi, Fiat and Mazda, among others, are introducing support for CarPlay.
Manufacturers Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Audi, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Mazda and Ram have now announced cars that have CarPlay support. It is not yet known which models the manufacturers will equip with CarPlay. Earlier, BMW, Ford, Volvo and Mercedes, among others, announced that they will equip cars with CarPlay support.
Cars with CarPlay let iOS device owners use iMessage and, if it is an iPhone, make phone calls. Music from the device can also be played and users can navigate via Apple Maps.
Just last week, Google introduced a competitor to CarPlay, Android Auto. Apps run on an Android smartphone, but the image can be streamed to the on-board computer of a car. Audi is the first manufacturer to announce that it will support Android Auto and CarPlay simultaneously.
