Apple appoints new chief executive for hardware team

Apple appoints John Ternus as senior vice president of Hardware Engineering. He succeeds Dan Riccio, who will be working on a new project within Apple. Ternus has been the vice president of the hardware team since 2013.

Ternus was already in charge of the hardware team responsible for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro. He was also a key figure in the transition from Intel x86 processors to proprietary Arm chips, according to Apple.

Apple now names Ternus senior vice president of the hardware team as his predecessor takes on a new role. Dan Riccio, who has been with Apple since 1998 and now holds the title of vice president of engineering. According to Apple, he will be working on a new project in that role, reporting directly to CEO Tim Cook.

Apple doesn’t say exactly what Riccio will be working on. It may be the development of its own car, which Apple is rumored to be working on. Riccio has been involved in the development of virtually all Apple products, from the first-generation iMac to the latest iPhones and AirPods, according to the manufacturer. He joined Apple’s Product Design team in 1998 and has been the leader of the Hardware Engineering team since 2012.
