Apple adds 4k movies with HDR support to iTunes
Apple has started releasing movies in iTunes that support 4k resolution and HDR playback. Owners of full HD movies previously purchased via iTunes will receive a free upgrade for the possible 4k version with HDR, if supported.
The films Wonder Woman, John Wick and La La Land, among others, have already been released in 4k and hdr, with special 4k symbols and logos of the hdr standards added, MacRumors reports. There will also be 4k movies available without HDR support, such as Alien: Covenant. Apple has not yet added the 4k movies to iTunes in all regions, but it will soon.
The fact that Apple is now adding 4k content with HDR support to iTunes is linked to the introduction of the new Apple TV 4k, the new media player that the company recently announced. The device can play 4k footage and supports the HDR standards HDR10 and Dolby Vision. The media player features Apple’s A10X soc, which came out early this year and first appeared in the new iPad Pro models.
Apple also announced that it would start selling 4k movies through iTunes, with users who have previously purchased an HD version of a movie get a free upgrade to the 4k HDR version. Compared to the prices of films in full HD resolution, no higher prices are asked for the purchase of the 4k variants. The new Apple TV will be available for purchase from September 22. A 32GB version costs 199 euros and a 64GB model is available for 219 euros. The previous Apple TV remains in the range for 159 euros.
