Apple has acquired Fleetsmith, a company that provides mobile device management tools for Apple devices. With this, Apple will be doing business device management for the first time, something that until now has only been done by third-party companies.

Fleetsmith will continue to offer its services after the acquisition, which means that Apple has an MDM offer under its own management for the first time. “Our shared values (…) allow us to truly fulfill our mission of delivering Fleetsmith to businesses and institutions of all sizes, around the world,” the Fleetsmith founders said in the announcement.

It is striking that the company itself announces that there is a takeover by Apple. Apple makes dozens of acquisitions a year, but in many cases that comes out in other ways than with an official announcement.

MDM services on Apple devices have so far been provided by third-party companies such as Jamf, Mobile Iron and Mosyle. Apple has not yet commented on the acquisition. It is also unknown how much Apple will pay to acquire Fleetsmith.
