App reveals Microsoft’s plan to become a virtual provider

Microsoft plans to become a virtual provider. The company has not yet spoken openly about the new service, but the description of the app gives away what Microsoft is planning. The company is going to make its own SIM card.

The Cellular Data app mentions that it only works on the PC, making it seem like the service is intended for desktops, laptops and tablets, not smartphones. According to the description, the application requires a ‘Microsoft Sim Card’.

According to Microsoft, when the SIM card is in the device, a Wi-Fi network will appear in the list of Wi-Fi networks called Cellular Data, and clicking on it will take users to an interface through which the company offers cellular data.

It is unknown whether the service will also work in the Benelux. “The service is available in select markets, and the offers apply to domestic subscriptions only. International roaming offers will be available soon,” Microsoft said in its description.

The purchase of data is presumably via a Microsoft account, notes The Verge. It is unknown when Microsoft will announce prices and terms of the service.
