AOC claims to block ‘harmful’ blue light with screen technology
Screen manufacturer AOC says it has developed a new technology that reduces ‘harmful’ blue light from screens with LED backlights by up to ninety percent. It should prevent permanent eye damage.
According to AOC, there are studies that show that prolonged exposure to blue light can lead to macular degeneration. This is an eye condition in which visual acuity decreases due to the death of cells in the central part of the retina. Vision is then permanently damaged. AOC refers in the message, which Softpedia has fully posted, to Professor Carl Kupfer. He predicts that macular degeneration could become an epidemic in the future. It is not known whether the conclusion of the study has been examined in peer reviews.
LED-backlit displays use diodes that emit light to illuminate the display. The monitors emit a short-wavelength blue light, which is said to be harmful to the eyes. It is compared to the UV light emitted by the sun. AOC claims that the ‘Anti-Blue Light’ technology blocks up to ninety percent of harmful light rays. The company is introducing the system in the AOC 76V series, according to MaximumPC.
The technique would not affect screen performance. Compared to other techniques, this technology would not dim or distort the colors. The original color and clarity would therefore be preserved. This is achieved by a new technology, which would shift the wavelength of the light-emitting diodes from 450nm to 460nm. The ‘harmful’ wavelength is therefore out of range.
