Anime streaming service Crunchyroll stops free simulcast content with advertising
Crunchyroll will no longer offer advertising animes to non-paying users beginning with the Spring 2022 season. Existing content that was previously available for free with advertising can still be viewed.
The simulcast content on Crunchyroll has so far been available to users with a free account for a week after its release in Japan, with occasional commercials being shown while streaming. This construction is no longer possible for almost all new content. On the other hand, with a paid subscription of at least five euros per month, users can receive a new episode via the streaming service an hour after the premiere in Japan. emphasizes Crunchyroll in a blog post.
There is one small exception, namely a ‘tasting dish’ of the first episodes of a number of anime’s. For the spring season of 2022, Crunchyroll selected the series below, with the first three episodes airing a week after the original release with a free subscription with advertising. This promotion is valid until May 31. After that, the relevant series can only be viewed with a paid subscription. It is not clear whether the streaming service will continue to put together a ‘trial dish’ every season.
The free selection of animes this season concerns:
- Spy x Family
- A Couple of Cuckoos
- Dawn of the Witch
- Tomodachi Game
- Skeleton Knight in Another World
- Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie
- The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn as a Typical Nobody
- Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs
