Crunchyroll has announced that it has reached the one million paying users milestone. Furthermore, the anime streaming service has revealed that it has more than 20 million registered users.

The service indicates that the number of paying users has increased by 36 percent in the past year, making this the service’s most successful year to date. Crunchyroll claims that anime is penetrating deeper into mainstream culture, which is partly responsible for the streaming service’s growing success. The service is one of the ten largest video streaming services by the number of paying users, according to a study by Park Associates.

Crunchyroll started in 2006 as a streaming service that specializes in making Japanese series and comics available worldwide. A user can register for free with the website and thus get a large part of the offer. Paying users get access to exclusive content, HD quality and earlier access to new series for EUR 4.99 per month. The service can be used within web browsers or with an app, which is available for the majority of mobile platforms and consoles.
