Animated film Super Mario Bros. could hit cinemas in 2022′
Illumination Entertainment founder Chris Meledandri has confirmed previous rumors of a Super Mario Bros. animated film being made. He says the Super Mario Bros. movie has “priority development” status and could hit theaters by 2022.
Meledandri tells Variety that he is satisfied with the fact that the earlier Super Mario film from 25 years ago “wasn’t done right.” “I think it’s more exciting or worth more than simply making another version of a movie that was already extremely good,” Meledandri said. He is referring to the movie Super Mario Bros. from 1993, which received bad reviews.
The founder of Illumination emphasizes that the new animated film will work very closely with the creator of the original game. This includes Shigeru Miyamoto, the designer and producer of the original Super Mario Bros.
Illumination Entertainment is not an unknown name in the animated film market. The studio has previously made the successful Despicable Me movies and spin-offs. Other successful animated films, such as The Secret Life of Pets and Sing, have also been developed by the studio.
In addition to the 1993 Mario film, an animated series was also broadcast in the late 1980s, called The Super Mario Bros. Super Show. However, production of this series was discontinued after a single season.
