Android shows Bing, info.com and PrivacyWall as search engines in the Benelux

Android will show the search engines Bing, info.com and PrivacyWall on phones from October 1 as alternatives to Google. This is evident from the results of an auction. DuckDuckGo offered less and disappears from the screen.

The auction covers the period from October 1 to December 31, Google reports. DuckDuckGo, which is now visible in all countries, will only be seen in Bulgaria, Croatia, Iceland and Liechtenstein from October 1.

Bing is Microsoft’s search engine, while info.com is from the American System1. The third search engine in the window, PrivacyWall, is a privacy-focused search engine whose founders claim to be from Stanford University. Info.com and PrivacyWall are both relatively unknown names.

DuckDuckGo advocates a different structure of the system and asks the European Commission to change the auction system. The company said earlier that it was making a loss because it had to offer too much relative to its earnings.

Google has been showing the selection screen since 1 March during the installation of Android in European member states. With this change, Google complies with the requirements of the European Commission. In 2018, the company fined 4.34 billion euros for abuse of power in Android. Google would favor its own apps and hinder competing services.
