Analyst: Google shipped 3.9 million Pixel phones in 2017

Google shipped a total of 3.9 million Pixel phones in 2017, analyst firm IDC has calculated. This gives the search giant a market share of 0.26 percent in the global smartphone market.

With 3.9 million devices, the number of copies of Google phones delivered doubled compared to 2016, reports IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo on Twitter. Despite this, the search giant is a small player compared to the competition. Apple and Samsung already sell far more smartphones in a week than Google does in a year.

The figures are about the first and second generation of the Pixel phones together. The Pixel 2 came out in October, the Pixel 2 XL went on sale in November in many countries. Google sells its devices in a limited number of countries. For example, the phones are not officially available in the Benelux, but are available in, for example, Germany and France.

The IDC analyst reports Furthermore, Essential has shipped about 88,000 of its first phone PH-1. Figures from the Play Store previously indicated that the number of copies of the device sold was limited. With 88,000 units, the market share is around 0.006 percent.

HMD is now prospering in Europe, says Jeronimo. The analyst says nothing about the smartphones under the Nokia brand, but the Finnish manufacturer delivered 59.2 million feature phones last year, the first year that models went on sale. This made it the market leader in Europe and the number two worldwide in the field of feature phones. Feature phones are often cheap models without a smartphone operating system. HMD’s most famous model is the Nokia 3310 (2017).
