Analyst: Consumers bought 4.2 million smartwatches in the past three months
Consumers purchased a total of about 4.2 million smartwatches in the past quarter. That is estimated by analyst firm Strategy Analytics. More than half of those watches were Apple Watches, the agency thinks.
The smartwatch market peaked during the holiday season and shipments have halved since then, Strategy Analytics estimates show. Of the 4.2 million watches delivered, 2.2 million are Apple Watch. About 600,000 would be from Samsung. The analyst firm does not provide estimates from other manufacturers such as Motorola, Huawei, Asus and Pebble.
The figure only includes smart watches and not fitness trackers. Analysts’ estimates are the only way to see how the smartwatch market is doing, as manufacturers don’t disclose delivery figures.
The market has seen a rebound from the release of the Apple Watch in April last year, but some of the growth has come from manufacturers other than Apple. Last fall, a new generation of smartwatches was also released, including the Huawei Watch and Asus Zenwatch 2 with Android Wear, the Gear S2 with Tizen and the Pebble Time Round.
