‘Among Us is the most downloaded mobile game of 2020, but turnover is lagging’

Social deduction game Among Us is the most downloaded game of 2020 according to app analysis company Apptopia, beating other well-known titles such as PUBG Mobile and Roblox. However, the game is not in the top ten in terms of revenue.

Among Us is a free game with in-game purchases. Players will be able to remove the ads on the mobile versions and there are certain cosmetics for sale. Despite these monetization opportunities, the game doesn’t make a ranking for revenue, while PUBG Mobile, also a free downloadable game with microtransactions, tops that list.

Among Us was released in 2018 but gained popularity in 2020 when the game was brought to the attention of the general public by popular streamers. Since then, according to SuperData analysis, the game has become “the most popular game ever”, with 500 million active players. That agency also stated at the time that the game generated relatively little turnover for how popular it is. 97 percent of the player base in November consisted of players on smartphones, who can therefore play for free.

Among Us is available for Windows, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. The game will also be coming to the new and previous generation Xbox consoles sometime this year.
