AMD updates Radeon Pro Duo with Polaris chips and 32GB gddr5
AMD has updated its Radeon Pro Duo. The card is less powerful than its predecessor and the bandwidth is also lower, but the use of two Polaris 10 GPUs means that the card also consumes less.
The card is very different from last year’s Radeon Pro Duo. The new version has two Polaris 10 GPUs, each of which can address 16GB of gddr5 via a 256-bit memory bus. The switch from the Fiji XT GPUs to the Polaris variants means that the computing power drops from 16.4tflops to 11.45tflops. In addition, the transition from hbm to gddr5 causes a decrease in bandwidth from a total of 1024GB/s to 448GB/s.
On the other hand, the tbp is lower: from a maximum of 350W to 250W. This ensures that the Radeon Pro no longer needs water cooling. AMD also charges a lower suggested retail price. Where last year’s Radeon Pro Duo had a suggested retail price of $1499, AMD is asking $999 for this year’s Radeon Pro Duo. Converted with VAT, that is about 1113 euros. The card will be available at the end of May.
The other specifications of the card are that it has three displayport 1.4 and an HDMI 2.0 connection, for example to provide four 4k monitors at 60Hz or an 8k monitor at 60Hz with two cables. AMD supplies the card with certified isv drivers and focuses on use for graphics applications such as Autodesk Maya, DaVinci Resolve, The Foundry Mari and Dassault Systèmes Solidworks.
