AMD has released an FSR plug-in for Unreal Engine 4 through its GPUOpen initiative. This makes it easier for game developers to implement the technology in games made with that engine.

The plug-in is intended for Unreal Engine 4.27.1 and newer and AMD provides tips and recommendations on how to apply FSR in games on the GPUOpen website. Developers can set the upscaling percentage used with the different quality options. However, AMD recommends using the default values.

It was already possible to provide games made in Unreal Engine with FSR. Godfall was one of the first FSR games and was made with that engine. However, with the advent of the plug-in, the technology is easier to implement. Unreal Engine 4 is one of the most widely used game engines in recent years.

AMD released FidelityFX Super Resolution in June. The technology is a counterpart to Nvidia’s DLSS, although the technology behind it is different. Both techniques render games in a lower resolution and then apply upscaling. This results in higher frame rates than rendering in native resolution. Nvidia’s DLSS only works on GeForce graphics cards and uses AI upscaling. AMD’s FSR basically works on all video cards.

There are currently 35 games available with FSR support, with a further 23 on a list to receive support “soon”. In addition to PC games, that includes some console titles. DLSS, which has been around for some time, is available on more than 120 PC games.
