AMD presents Ryzen 5000U and 5000HX laptop processors with Zen 3 cores
AMD has announced its Ryzen 5000 laptop processors with Zen 3 cores. There will be economical 5000U variants with a TDP of 15W and 5000HX variants with a TDP of 45W for gaming notebooks. The processors have a maximum of eight cores.

The top model in the line of economical laptop processors is the Ryzen 7 5800U, an octacore with sixteen threads and a boost speed of up to 4.4GHz. Like the Ryzen 4000U processors, this chip has a TDP of 15W. AMD claims that laptops with the new Ryzen 5000U processors are much more economical than variants with previous generation chips and therefore have a longer battery life.
Not all Ryzen 5000U processors have Zen 3 cores; there will also be variants with Zen 2 cores. While they have similar clock speeds, they will be slower because the performance per tick of Zen 3 cores is significantly better than the Zen 2 cores.

AMD Ryzen 5000HX for gaming laptops
AMD is also introducing a new line of overclockable Ryzen 5000HX processors for gaming laptops. These variants get a tdp of 45W and AMD puts a plus after that, which seems to indicate that the laptop manufacturer can configure them further to consume more. This allows the processors to maintain high clock speeds for a longer period of time. The Ryzen 9 5980HX is the top model, with eight cores at a maximum of 4.8GHz. There will also be a Ryzen 9 5900HX, clocked at 4.6GHz. Both HX processors have 20MB L3 cache.
The Ryzen 5000U and HX processors use the same Zen 3 cores as the Ryzen 5000 processors for desktops that AMD released last year. These are processors that are made on a 7nm process. In addition to the new HX processors, there will also be Ryzen 5000H and HS variants, just like with the Ryzen 4000U series. These are processors with a TDP of 35W.

50 percent more laptop models with AMD than last year
More than 150 different laptop designs with Ryzen 5000 processors will be released this year, according to AMD. That’s more than previous generations, according to AMD, there were 100 and 70 designs with Ryzen 4000 and Ryzen 3000 laptop processors, respectively. The first laptops with Ryzen 5000 processors should be available from February.
