AMD makes preview of FidelityFX Super Resolution available in Xbox toolkit

Xbox game developers can get started implementing FSR in their console games. AMD has added a preview version of the technology to the Game Development Kit for Xbox consoles.

Jason Ronald, director of product management at Xbox, reports on Twitter that FSR is available as a preview in the GDK for Xbox consoles. He mentions both the Xbox Series X and S and the Xbox One. FSR is part of the FidelityFX toolkit, which was already partly available to Xbox developers.

Since last week, FSR has been available for PCs and the technology works in a select number of games. The technology is intended to improve the performance of games by rendering them at a lower resolution and upscaling them in a smart way, with the least possible loss of image quality.

It was already known that FSR would also come to consoles, but a timeline was not given before. The technique is interesting for consoles because it can boost performance when using heavy graphic effects such as ray tracing. Current Xbox games with ray tracing often run in a 30fps mode. Using FSR, such games could potentially run at 60fps.

FSR is an open technique, which is not tied to specific hardware. PlayStation consoles could also take advantage of it, but Sony has yet to announce its implementation. In principle, the technique also works on Nvidia GPUs; AMD already demonstrated that, but Nvidia will have to implement it itself by means of drivers to make it work in practice.
