AMD lowers price Radeon R9 280

AMD has implemented a price cut for its Radeon R9 280. The US MSRP has been lowered by $30 to $249, bringing the price more in line with other Radeon R9 cards in terms of performance.

The Radeon R9 280 was announced in March at a suggested retail price of $279. That was eerily close to the $299 MSRP of the much more powerful R9 280X. However, the price of those and other Radeon cards was much higher in practice, due to shortages that were due, among other things, to the popularity among cryptocurrency miners.

AMD tells TechReport that the ‘craziness’ is now over and that the R9 line is now available at the right prices, which should remain so for the foreseeable future. An inventory of the site shows that AMD’s promise is correct. AMD confirms to AnandTech that the suggested retail price of the R9 280 has been reduced from 279 to 249 dollars. The price drop is not yet visible in the Pricewatch, but it should be in the coming weeks.
