AMD lowers HD 7000 series prices
The American chip manufacturer AMD lowers the prices of its video cards. Starting July 16, the prices of the latest cards from the Radeon series will drop. AMD previously released new drivers to improve the performance of the video cards.
Almost all video cards of the AMD Radeon HD series are reduced in price. The HD 7970 gets the smallest discount, of twenty dollars. The HD 7950 and the HD 7870 will be fifty dollars cheaper, AnandTech says.
With this AMD competes with, among others, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 670. The Nvidia video card is faster, but due to the price reduction by AMD, it is also more expensive than the HD 7950. The price difference is due to the recent price reduction at fifty dollars.
AMD also states that the HD 7970 GHz Edition should be available soon. The video card should be on sale at the end of June, but AMD’s partners have decided to use their own design instead of AMD’s reference design. This caused the HD 7970 GHz Edition to experience some delay. Sapphire and XFX are said to have cards on the shelves as early as next week.
Earlier this month, AMD released new drivers. The new drivers are suitable for all Radeon models from the HD 2400 series. The new drivers are available for Linux, Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 and can be used in both a 32- and 64-bit environment.
