AMD Introduces New Opterons

Chip designer AMD has released five new server processors in its Opteron series. The five CPUs from the Opteron 6100 line have eight or twelve cores and have clock frequencies from 1.8 to 2.5 GHz.

Three of the new processors belong to AMD’s HE series processors and are intended for power-efficient servers. The model with eight cores, the 6132 HE, has a clock speed of 2.2GHz and has a TDP of 65W. The eight cores each have 512KB L2 cache and share 6MB L3 cache twice. The dodecacore HE processor was given the type number 6166 HE and also has a TDP of 65W. The twelve cores run at 1.8GHz and also have 12MB L3 cache.

The 6140 is the other octacore and has a clock speed of 2.6GHz. The TDP of this processor is 80W, the same as that of the 6176. This variant with twelve cores has a clock speed of 2.3GHz and again has 12MB L3 cache. The fifth new Opteron is also a version with twelve cores, but the 6180 SE comes from AMD’s performance series. The tdp of the CPU clocked at 2.5GHz is 105W and again 12MB L3 cache is available.

All new Opterons are built with Magny-Cours cores and are manufactured using a 45nm process. The tdp’s mentioned are not comparable with Intel’s tdp: AMD uses its acp, or average cpu power, for this, which is generally lower than tdp. The processors can be plugged into a motherboard with up to four pieces and fit into the G34 socket. Prices range from $591 to $1514.
