AMD introduces frugal mobile socs codenamed Mullins and Beema

AMD has introduced two new product families for mobile devices. The socs with code names Mullins and Beema are to follow the current generations of APUs and be used in tablets and laptops.

With the APUs of the Beema and Mullins generation, AMD has released a new series of accelerated processing units for mobile devices. The APUs are built as a soc, so that almost all functionality – from CPU and GPU cores to USB controllers – is contained in one chip. The motherboard designs of tablets and laptops can therefore be simple, so that costs are reduced. The Beema and Mullins APUs are therefore intended for budget laptops and tablets.

Compared to the previous generation of apus codenamed Temash and Kabini, AMD mainly promises socs that are more economical. Energy consumption has been reduced so that tablets with Mullins-socs can be passively cooled. The speed has not improved drastically compared to the previous generation, as the same Jaguar cores are used for the CPU cores. Graphically, the socs are slightly stronger, although AMD still uses Graphics Core Next cores for the GPU.

The socs have received a higher clock speed for both cpu and gpu cores. In addition, an ARM core is built in, which should ensure hardware security of sensitive information. AMD introduces three Mullins-socs for tablets with clock speeds up to 2.2GHz and TDPs up to 4.5W. For laptops, four Beema-socs of 10W or 15W and clock speeds of up to 2.4GHz will be on the market.
