AMD introduces FirePro S9170 video card with 32GB memory
AMD has announced a new video card in the FirePro S series. The FirePro S9170 uses the same GPU as the S9150, but has twice as much RAM and is clocked slightly higher.
The FirePro S-series video cards are intended for servers that use the GPU for HPC applications. According to AMD, the FirePro S9170 should not be seen as a replacement for the S9150, but is an addition to the line. The biggest difference with the S9150 is the amount of gddr5 memory, which has doubled from 16GB for the S9150 to 32GB for the S9170.
AMD uses ‘Hawaii’ GPUs for the S9100 series. The GPU is clocked at a maximum of 930MHz with the S9170 compared to a maximum of 900MHz with the FirePro S9150, which provides slightly more compute power for the new FirePro. As a result, the tdp rises to 275 watts, although AMD has indicated that the S9170 can also be configured at 235 watts. Later in the third quarter, AMD will ship the new FirePros to server builders such as HP, Dell and Super Micro.
