AMD Introduces Embedded Ryzen Apu With Vega 3 GPU Coming To Atari VCS

AMD has introduced a new line of embedded processors. There will be two variants of the Embedded R1000 apu. Both are dual cores that can work on four threads, with a Vega 3 GPU. Atari puts such a chip in its VCS console.

The Ryzen Embedded R1505G and R1606G are frugal dual-cores that should end up in fanless systems, AMD says. The APUs are positioned under the V1000 models that AMD already released last year. There were also variants with more cores in between.

AMD makes the new Ryzen Embedded processors just like the previous versions on a 14nm process. It concerns dual cores that can work on four threads and the built-in GPU can control up to three 4k screens. The APUs have eight PCI-e lanes. The older V1000 variants have sixteen PCI-e lanes and can control four 4k screens.

The tdp of the R1000 apus is adjustable by hardware manufacturers between 12 and 25W and the clock speeds are slightly higher than those of the dualcore in the V1000 series. The computing power of the fastest R1606G, the fastest soc in the new series, matches that of the Ryzen 3 3200U apu for laptops.

AMD confirms that Atari will be using one of the new apus in its VCS console. Atari recently postponed that console until the end of 2019, because the company wanted to wait for this new processor. The graphics processing power of the console will be limited compared to competitors such as the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4. Although they have older hardware, it is much more powerful than the frugal apu that Atari will deploy.

The Ryzen Embedded processors are intended for fanless applications in, for example, high-end switches and other network equipment, in casino gaming devices or thin clients and digital advertising screens. Numerous manufacturers have already committed to use the new APUs, AMD says.
