AMD has tested Ryzen processors on Windows 7, but does not support it
AMD has announced that it has tested the operation of its upcoming Ryzen processors under Windows 7, but is not developing drivers for them. The company is responding to rumors that it would make drivers for Windows 7 itself.
The company has “validated” the processors on Windows 7 and 10, but only provides them with drivers and support under Windows 10, PCWorld writes. This suggests that the processors will work with the older operating system, but performance may not be optimal and there is no support for newer features and instructions.
Last week, the German website ComputerBase reported that AMD had announced at a manufacturer information event that the processor manufacturer would develop drivers for Windows 7 itself. It is believed that this was a misunderstanding and AMD had only told that Ryzen processors work with Windows. 7.
Microsoft previously announced that new processors, such as the Kaby Lake chips and AMD’s upcoming lineup, will only be officially supported on Windows 10. Windows 7 and 8.1 will not release updates to make the operating systems work properly. Initially, this would already be implemented with Skylake processors, but this has been reversed after a fuss.
