AMD Demonstrates FreeSync Over HDMI

AMD showed at the Computex in Taiwan that its FreeSync technology also works in combination with HDMI. A standard monitor would just need new firmware to get this working.

AMD demonstrated FreeSync over HDMI at its booth at Computex in conjunction with an AMD R9 2xx card and a monitor with a standard Realtek tcon. Realtek has tweaked the controller’s firmware, and AMD has added support for the technology to its drivers. In addition, it is an adapted protocol for HDMI 1.4a.

AMD’s goal is probably for FreeSync to become part of the HDMI standard, writes AnandTech. Previously, the VESA included FreeSync under the name Adaptive Sync in the displayport 1.2a standard, although implementation of the technology is not mandatory.

FreeSync is a dynamic refresh rate technique that ensures that the display and video card or apu work completely in sync, thus avoiding tearing and stuttering. It is therefore an open counterpart to Nvidia’s Gsync, which requires a hardware module for monitors, but not for laptops.
