AMD confirms the arrival of Phoenix 2 APUs, possibly with two types of cores

AMD confirms that it will soon release the Phoenix 2 APUs. The APU will be smaller in size than the current Phoenix APUs and has six cores. The APUs will probably have a hybrid architecture with Zen 4 and Zen 4c cores, according to previous rumors.

AMD confirms the arrival of Phoenix 2 against XDA. The company says it wants to release the Phoenix 2 APU in addition to the already available Phoenix APU that is in the Ryzen 7640 from earlier this year. According to XDA, these APUs will have a smaller one with six cores and a surface area of ​​137mm². The current Phoenix APUs have eight cores and a surface area of ​​178mm². The Phoenix 2 APU may also have a hybrid architecture. The APU would have two ‘normal’ Zen 4 cores, but also four Zen 4c cores that are optimized for higher efficiency with a physically smaller size and lower clock speeds.

AMD does not confirm the use of a hybrid architecture to XDA. XDA bases itself on previous rumors. A document from AMD previously appeared which showed that AMD wanted to use such an architecture in Phoenix 2. Intel does that too; that company uses powerful Performance and lighter Efficiency cores in its CPUs. XDA makes the link with the efficient cores and the Zen 4c cores that AMD previously showed.

Rumors have been going around for some time that AMD’s Phoenix 2 APUs will have a hybrid architecture, consisting of Zen 4 and Zen 4c cores. AMD previously confirmed to Tom’s Hardware that it wants to release CPUs with two types of cores, although it did not confirm that Phoenix 2 will have such a build.

AMD says the Phoenix 2 APU will be used in the upcoming Ryzen 3 7440U due out later this year. That chip also has four GPU cores instead of the twelve of the previous Phoenix APU and does not have a Ryzen AI engine.
