AMD CEO: RDNA 2 reference cards won’t get a blower cooler
The reference cards of AMD’s upcoming RDNA 2 GPUs will not use a blower cooler. This is confirmed by AMD Radeon vice president, who says that the blower cooler will be scrapped in response to ‘community feedback’.
Scott Herkelman of AMD Radeon confirmed this on Reddit. He did this shortly after announcing AMD’s RDNA 2 GPUs during the company’s Financial Analyst Day. Herkelman writes that feedback on the RX 5700XT GPU has “led AMD to a design with two or three fans.” The CEO explicitly mentions in another response that it concerns ‘reference cards for gamers’. Presumably, the Radeon Pro GPUs for workstations do retain a blower design.

AMD has also lifted a corner of the veil during the Financial Analyst Day. During a presentation about the upcoming RDNA 2 GPUs, the company showed an image showing the suspected design of the next-generation graphics cards, which AMD will refer to as Navi 2X. This is an open cooler with two fans. AMD has not yet confirmed whether this will be the actual design of the GPU coolers.
The first video cards based on RDNA 2 should be released this year. According to AMD, the GPUs are intended for 4k gaming, and will receive support for hardware ray tracing, among other things. The video cards are also made using a 7nm process. The cards should perform up to 50 percent better per watt compared to the current RX 5000 series.
