AMD Athlon 200GE processor is overclockable despite locked multiplier

The Athlon 200GE apu introduced by AMD in September can still run at higher frequencies. A video from a YouTube user shows that the processor can be overclocked. He used MSI’s B350M Gaming Pro motherboard.

YouTube user TechEpiphany shows in a gameplay video of Battlefield 4 that he managed to boost his copy of the AMD Athlon 200GE to 3.8GHz, while the processor on paper only goes beyond 3.2GHz and has a locked multiplier. He also managed to overclock the apu to 3.9GHz. This resulted in performance improvements of between 10 and 20 percent, although a Vega 64 was used, which had to do with a certain bottleneck due to the APU.

Based on the video, Tom’s Hardware put it to the test and also managed to run the processor at a clock speed of 3.9GHz. The website has made inquiries with AMD. The manufacturer reports that it is not responsible for the unlocked multiplier and does not officially support the overclocking of the Athlon 200GE.

AMD says any further questions should be directed to MSI, specifically about the B350M Gaming Pro’s bios functionality. The website Notebookcheck reports that any MSI motherboard with the AGESA 1006 update has the ability to overclock the Athlon 200GE.

The AMD Athlon 200GE is the first Athlon processor based on the Zen architecture and has two cores with SMT, allowing the processor to work on four threads simultaneously. The integrated GPU is a Vega 3 with three compute units. The default clock speed is 3.2GHz and a turbo is not present. The apu, which costs less than 60 euros, uses the AM4 socket, just like the more powerful Ryzen processors.
