AMD Announces New Ryzen APUs and Plans 12nm Zen for April
AMD announced new mobile and desktop APUs at CES. On the mobile platform it concerns Ryzen 3 and Ryzen Pro processors and for the desktop two quad-core processors with Vega GPUs. The second-generation Ryzen chips are slated for April.
AMD has announced two processors for the AM4 platform, both of which have four cores. The Ryzen 3 2200G is clocked at 3.7GHz and gets a ‘Vega 8’ GPU at up to 1100MHz. The Ryzen 5 2400G is clocked 200MHz higher and is also equipped with a GPU with more compute units, namely eleven pieces. Both CPUs can be set to a TDP of 45 or 65 watts.
On the mobile front, AMD is announcing five new processors, including new entry-level processors. The simplest is the Ryzen 3 2200U, a dualcore with SMT and a Vega GPU with three compute units. The Ryzen 3 2300U is a quad-core, but again it has no SMT, and a faster gpu with six compute units. In addition, AMD has presented Pro versions of the 2300U, 2500U and 2700U processors. The Pro versions have the same clock speeds as the non-pro processors, but are intended for business environments, and support better security, managing and are guaranteed to be available unchanged for 24 months.
Finally, AMD announced that the new generation of ‘Zen 2’ processors, which will probably be produced at 7nm, is ready for production. Before it comes out, the updated Zen processors produced at 12nm will first become available in April. The Ryzen 5 2400G and Ryzen 3 2200G desktop processors will be available February 12. It is not yet clear when the Ryzen 3 processors will appear in laptops.
