AMD Announces FirePro S-Series for Multiuser Use

AMD has announced two server graphics cards: the FirePro S7150 and S7150 x2. AMD focuses on hardware virtualization with the cards, so that different users can use the gpu for cad, for example.

AMD speaks of ‘mxgpu’ technology for its new video cards, which stands for multiuser GPU. The manufacturer uses the single root i/o virtualization interface, an extension of the pci-e specification. Among other things, this standard ensures that memory is hardware isolated, so that one virtual machine cannot access the data of another. The cards are compatible with VMware’s ESXi 6.0 hypervisors.

The AMD FirePro S7150 with 8GB gddr5 can serve up to 16 users simultaneously, while the FirePro S7150 x2 with two GPUs also has twice the memory and can provide up to 32 users with graphics processing power. The cards contain error correcting code memory and the chips communicate with this via a 256bit wide interface. Furthermore, there is support for DirectX 11.1, OpenGL 4.4 and OpenCL 2.0, and the tdp is 150W. The cards are built around a Tonga GPU, but the company has not yet disclosed the exact specifications.
