AMD announces entry-level video card Radeon R5 230

AMD releases a new entry-level model in the R5 series of video cards. The R5 230 is based on the Caicos GPU and is aimed at desktop PCs that do not have an integrated graphics processor. The clock speed of the reference model is 625MHz and there is 1GB of video memory.

The R5 230 has support for DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.3. On board are 160 stream processors, 8 tmu’s and 4 rop’s. The core clock runs at 625MHz and the GPU is combined with DDR3 memory at 1066MHz. The memory bus is 64 bits wide.

Due to its modest capacities, the card does not require an additional power connector and is mainly used for systems whose processor does not have an integrated GPU. The manufacturers Club 3D, XFX, Gigabyte and Sapphire will in any case bring those new R5 230 cards onto the market, many of which are passively cooled, and the entry-level card should be available immediately for around forty euros.
