AMD and Associated Press combine journalism with virtual reality
AMD and the Associated Press news agency have announced a partnership to integrate virtual reality into news and documentaries. AMD will supply the necessary hardware and software and AP will provide the content.
According to AMD and AP, the initiative will use Radeon technology to create virtual reality environments for news and documentaries. AMD provides the necessary hardware and software, and offers support for 360-degree and virtual reality video. AP uses AMD-provided products and services to create virtual content that puts users at the center of the action.
AMD uses its LiquidVR software to make news and documentaries available in virtual reality. This software is also part of the tools that AMD made available to everyone earlier this year. AP and AMD emphasize that despite the partnership, all content remains fully under AP’s control.
The Associated Press was already looking at options for 360-degree video and virtual reality at the end of 2015. For example, it came with a video in which a large sorting company could be viewed in 360 degrees and a virtual reality video was made about a refugee camp in Calais, France. Those videos can be viewed with the Samsung Gear VR and Google Cardboard, among others. These and other videos can already be seen on the VR news videos website.
