AMD also gives RX 470 and 480 optimizations for FSR and Intel considers support
AMD also provides the Radeon RX 470 and 480 with optimizations for FidelityFX Super Resolution, or FSR for short. This technique is AMD’s counterpart to Nvidia’s DLSS. Intel’s chief architect Raja Koduri also shows interest in the technology for the Xe HPG GPUs.
AMD states on reddit that the two video cards will get optimizations for FSR. Previously, the RX 400 cards were missing from the list of GPUs that would receive FSR optimizations, while AMD did mention the RX 500 series. This was striking, because the two series both use Polaris GPUs. The RX 500 GPUs were only clocked slightly higher than the RX 400 equivalents.
The manufacturer does not further explain why the GPUs were previously missing from the list of optimized graphics cards. FidelityFX Super Resolution is AMD’s counterpart to DLSS and is intended to increase framerates in games by rendering and upscaling games at a lower resolution. AMD announced the technology on Tuesday and will make it available from June 22.
Unlike Nvidia’s technology, FSR does not require any special hardware. As a result, the technology can also work on GPUs from other manufacturers, but AMD does not make any optimizations for this. Games need to be modified to enable FSR. Technical details about the operation of FSR have not yet been disclosed. AMD has indicated that it concerns spatial upscaling technology.
Intel has also shown interest in the technology. on Twitter gives Intel’s chief architect Raja Koduri to ‘be sure to look into it’. According to Koduri, the deep learning capabilities of Xe HPG GPUs lend themselves to such techniques. He therefore says that he is ‘certainly’ looking at open initiatives such as FSR ‘to make the work of software developers easier’.
