Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series will be released in September 2022
Amazon will broadcast its own The Lord of the Rings series from September 2, 2022 via its Prime Video streaming service. In 2017, the company announced that it had acquired the worldwide rights. There will be several seasons.
The series will be broadcast in 240 countries and territories where Prime Video is available, with a new episode released every week. The number of episodes in the first season has not yet been announced. Amazon has previously indicated that there will be several seasons. Amazon shows an image of the series for the first time, but does not yet show a trailer.
The series takes place thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. According to one description, the series is about both familiar and new characters and their confrontation with the rise of evil in Middle-earth. Filming for the first season has been completed, Amazon Studios reports in a press release. Amazon shot in New Zealand.
In 2017, Amazon announced it had acquired the rights to create and broadcast a Lord of the Rings series worldwide. It is said to have cost $250 million. According to Variety production costs the first season an additional 465 million dollars. This makes the series much more expensive than, for example, Game of Thrones or The Mandalorian, which cost about $ 15 million per episode, according to the site.
With the investment of millions, Amazon wants to persuade more customers to purchase a Prime Video subscription or to take out a Prime subscription for the online store. This also gives customers access to the video service. It is not known exactly how many Prime Video subscribers there are. At the presentation of the quarterly figures at the beginning of this year, then-CEO Jeff Bezos said that “more than 175 million Amazon Prime users” had streamed a movie or series in the past year.
