Until recently, Amazon had chargers with the Apple brand on them that turned out to be fake. The chargers were not only fake, but according to the reviews on the web store’s site, they were found to catch fire more often than the real chargers.

Apple itself found out that it was fake chargers, Patently Apple reports. The company Mobile Star turned out to be responsible for the sales. The sales were made through Amazon.com and not through a third party offering its goods through Amazon. As a result, it seemed to many consumers to be real chargers.

In recent months, Apple has claimed to have purchased more than 100 products listed on Amazon as Apple’s, and nearly 90 percent of them turned out to be fake. The company fears its reputation will be damaged by the inferior cables and chargers on sale. The reviews mention several cases where the purchased chargers melted or caught fire.

The Mobile Star cables and chargers have since disappeared from Amazon’s site. It is unknown whether other online stores also sold the accessories. Apple has filed a lawsuit against Mobile Star for the fake products.
