Amazon pulls Kindle app from Windows Store

Amazon has announced that it will remove the Kindle app from the Windows 10 store on October 27. The company redirects users to the desktop program or website. Nothing has been said about the app for Windows 10 Mobile.

Amazon is simplifying its approach and focusing its focus on the Kindle-for-PC app, the company writes in an email according to Windows Central. The online store states that the app will continue to work after it has been removed from the Store, but it cannot be reinstalled.

The company has posted a help page online to help users install the desktop program. People using Windows RT are directed to Kindle Cloud Reader, a web application that provides the same functionality as the app.

The email says nothing about a universal app for both Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile, the way Microsoft wants companies to develop applications. Amazon does have a mobile app. It appears to be available for the time being.

The choice to end support for the app is striking. Recently, Microsoft has been strongly encouraging developers to make more use of the Store, for example by giving them the ability to easily convert “old-fashioned” Win32 applications to be placed in the Store.
