Amazon has received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration in the United States to use its fleet of drones to deliver products to customers. Amazon is going to test its Prime Air service in practice.

Amazon has provided details for its unmanned aerial vehicle transport service to the US aviation authority in recent months, demonstrating that the technology is safe. The Federal Aviation Administration has certified the company’s service under the NYT under part 135 of its regulations, which deal with the delivery of goods with unmanned aviation systems.

The permission does not immediately mean that Amazon will introduce Prime Air on a large scale. The company says it wants to refine and further develop the techniques first, in collaboration with the FAA. However, the company will continue to test drone deliveries in practice.

With Prime Air, Amazon wants to enable deliveries with drones within half an hour. The company has been testing the service since 2013, and last year filed a request for approval with the FAA. UPS and Alphabet’s drone service Wing previously received FAA approval for parcel delivery with unmanned aerial vehicles.
