Amazon confirms acquisition of game data service Gamesparks

Amazon has acquired GameSparks. GameSparks is a service that uses tools and APIs to make it easier for game developers to store all kinds of game data on servers and to manage things like loot drop rates, virtual purchases and matchmaking.

Neither Amazon nor GameSparks have disclosed the amount involved in the acquisition. The TechCrunch website reported last July that Amazon paid $10 million for the company. GameSparks says it can continue to grow as part of Amazon, helping game companies create, maintain, and monetize games in new ways.

With this deal, Amazon probably wants to compete with Microsoft. In January, the company from Redmond acquired the ‘cloud gaming platform’ PlayFab, a service that is comparable to Gamesparks. Microsoft is going to integrate PlayFab into Azure.

GameSparks is a backend service for server running games for PC, consoles and mobile devices. About 45 different games that use the service are featured on the company’s website. GameSparks makes it easier for developers through APIs and SDKs to track and add things like leaderboards, tournaments, analytics, and microtransactions to their games.
