Amazon Announces GameOn Service for Integrating Leagues into Games
Amazon has announced a service called GameOn. This should enable game developers to add a competitive element to their game via a few APIs on desktops, consoles or mobile devices.
Amazon reports that the service is built on AWS and works on any OS. On a page about the service, the company mentions that it makes it possible, for example, to add elements such as rankings, leagues and competitions with different rounds to games. In addition, it is possible to award players digital and physical prizes. The latter is currently only possible in the US. In that case, the prizes will be sent by Amazon.
The American company says that several developers are now using GameOn and that use of the APIs is free until May 1. After that, developers have to pay $0.003 per play. Developers using the service will be provided with an interface in which they can manage various competitions. It’s not the first time Amazon has targeted the games market. For example, the company acquired game streaming service Twitch in 2014 and made available its own game engine called Lumberyard in 2016.
