Amazon acquires mesh router manufacturer Eero

Amazon has announced the acquisition of Eero, an American manufacturer of mesh routers. According to Amazon, having their own router technology will make it easier for consumers to connect their smart home devices.

Amazon could use the technology, among other things, to streamline the installation of Alexa-enabled gadgets. It is not clear how much money is involved in the acquisition. Eero is one of several network equipment manufacturers that focuses on mesh routers. The company only delivers in the US and Canada and whether there are plans to also serve Europe is unknown.

Mesh routers generally suffer less from dead Wi-Fi zones where there is hardly any signal. Instead of a single router, the system uses multiple access points in the home. The devices would also require little maintenance: updates are installed automatically and in the event of malfunctions, the router tries to solve the problem itself, using instructions via the internet.

According to The Verge, not all existing Eero users will be happy with the acquisition by Amazon. According to the site, the e-commerce giant may gain even more valuable data about the user. Amazon also previously acquired Ring, the manufacturer behind the smart doorbell of the same name.
