AlphaGo also wins second game of go world champion

Google’s deep learning system AlphaGo has also won its second competition against South Korean world champion Lee Sedol. Just like in the first game, Sedol threw in the towel.

The second of five games between the world champion and the artificial intelligence ended after Lee Sedol gave up in his extra time. At that point, both players had already used their two available playing hours. With the win, the team behind AlphaGo is one step closer to the prize money of one million dollars. If Google wins, the prize money will go to charity.

The match lasted longer than the first match, mainly because both Lee Sedol and AlphaGo took more time to make their moves. After about fifty minutes of playtime, the artificial intelligence made a move that was described as highly unusual. This left Lee with even more time to consider his next steps. After the match, the world champion himself admitted that he was clearly losing this match.

The competition will be played at the Four Seasons Hotel in Seoul, South Korea. If AlphaGo also beats Lee in the match scheduled for Saturday, then in principle he is already the winner. Nevertheless, even then the series of matches will be completed until all five matches have been played.
