Alphabet wants to build ChatGPT-like assistant into Google Search
Alphabet has announced its quarterly results for the fourth quarter of 2022. In terms of revenue, the company performed almost the same as in the previous quarter, but with lower net income. Alphabet also plans to integrate an AI chatbot into Google Search.
The introduction of an AI chatbot is said to be a response to the huge popularity of ChatGPT, which has gone viral in recent weeks. Alphabet has been working behind the scenes on AI projects like LaMDA for a long time, but it has never been made available to a wide audience. Alphabet’s intention doesn’t come like a bolt from the blue; The New York Times recently wrote that Google enlisted the help of founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin to sharpen its AI strategy.
Alphabet has been working on the AI assistant for Search since the beginning of last year. Exactly what form this new functionality will take is not yet known. The New York Times article stated that the plan is to release the feature later this year. The AI bot may be unveiled during a Google event on “Search, Maps and more,” which takes place on February 8. Google says it is “rethinking how people search for and interact with information.”
What the actual Numbers concerns: parent company Alphabet raised $ 75.3 billion in Q4 2021. In Q4 of last year, that was $76 billion. At the same time, net income has shrunk from $20.6 billion to $13.6 billion.
Looking at individual Alphabet businesses, the company’s advertising business contracted by about $2.2 billion, or about 3.6 percent. At the same time, the company’s cloud segment grew by $2.4 billion, an increase of 32 percent. Alphabet itself also points out that it has “a lot of momentum” in the areas of YouTube subscriptions and Pixel phones.
