Almost all high-end Sony smartphones from the past 2 years have a 120Hz screen

Almost all high-end Sony smartphones that have appeared in the past two years turn out to have a screen that can refresh at 120Hz. However, Sony has never released a device that supports that function as standard.

The Xperia X, X Performance, XZ, XZs, XZ Premium, XZ1 and XZ1 Compact, among others, have a screen that can refresh at a full-HD resolution with 120Hz, writes XDA-Developers. Developers have found the support in the kernel files of those phones. Of all the high-end models from Sony over the past two years, only the 2016 X Compact does not have 120Hz support.

The screen mode can be activated in some cases, but so far it has worked poorly. If a custom rom has a kernel that defaults the screen to 120fps, then it will work, the site writes. It is unknown if Sony is working on updates to activate screen mode afterwards.

There are few mobile devices that have a working 120Hz mode. Apple calls the feature ProMotion and it’s on last year’s iPad Pros. Razer has put a 120Hz screen on its Razer Phone and some Japanese smartphones also have that function.
