The team behind the Alien Swarm mod Lambda Wars has officially released their game on Steam. Lambda Wars is a real-time strategy game where players can replay the battles of Half-Life 2.

The developers report in an update on Steam that Lambda Wars development is finally out of beta. Development for the game started way back in 2007 and the game had been playable for many years, but now version 1.0 has been reached. According to the creators, the mod was developed from a proof of concept to a full, asymmetric RTS game with a single player story, co-op and multiplayer modes. There is also a playing field to practice and an offline skirmish mode in which players have to compete against the AI.

In Lambda Wars, there are two factions that fight against each other, the Resistance and the Combine. Players can choose from the two factions and replay the battles of Half-Life 2, but from a camera angle above the units. All kinds of units can be controlled, such as the flying Manhacks, but also the large three-legged Striders. Production and research facilities must also be rigged to gain access to better units and upgrades.

Lambda Wars is based on the code of Alien Swarm, a top-down shooter released in 2010 based on the Source engine. Alien Swarm was a remake of the mod of the same name that already existed for Unreal Tournament 2004.
