Last year, director Oscar Sharp and researcher Ross Goodwin already made a film called Sunspring, which was written by an algorithm. In their new oeuvre they have also had David Hasselhoff’s texts drafted by artificial intelligence.

The lyrics are written by the same system that was also responsible for the lyrics in Sunspring: an artificial intelligence in the form of an LSTM that has christened itself Benjamin. In the new short film, Hasselhoff plays the role of the ‘Hoffbot’, according to Ars Technica. The film was made as part of the Sci-Fi London Film Festival. Based on various collections of subtitles, the makers have developed various AI models.

For example, the speech at the end of the current movie, “It’s No Game,” was generated from the Cornell Movie Dialogues Corpus. Other models were based on Hasselhoff series such as Knight Rider and Baywatch. It also features texts by Shakespeare and the work of West Wing author Aaron Sorkin.
