AI companies such as OpenAI consulted with Chinese institutions about AI regulations
AI companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI have consulted with Chinese institutions on rules and laws surrounding artificial intelligence. China and the US are in a trade conflict and a race over AI developments.
The conversations took place in the Swiss city of Geneva, reports Financial Times. The organizer of the talks, Shaikh Group, confirmed the meetings. These took place in July and October of last year. Although OpenAI and Anthropic were there, Google, for example, was missing and from the Chinese side, Tencent and TikTok parent company ByteDance were also not there. Governments were aware of the conversations.
The aim is to reach agreement on rules that AI development must comply with. Some scientists involved in the development of artificial intelligence worry that development without rules could lead to AI systems that could pose a threat to humanity. By drawing up these rules jointly, the scientists, institutes and governments involved believe they can eliminate those risks. If China and the US agree on rules, the thought is that other countries will also follow them.
