AdBlock Plus wants to block ads in apps on iOS

AdBlock Plus wants to create software for iPhones and iPads that can block ads in all apps. Tools in iOS 9 should make that possible. It is still unknown if and when the app to do that will come out.

AdBlock Plus is not sure yet if the adblocker for apps can come. That would depend on the tools that Apple releases to develop them under iOS 9. In addition, it is of course the question whether Apple would agree to the publication of an app in the App Store that blocks ads in other apps, but that seems unlikely. In that case, it would become a service that works outside the App Store. Apple has built-in support for content blockers in iOS 9.

The ad blocker for apps is a potential threat to the revenue of makers of mainly free apps, who try to monetize their work with advertisements. Should the ad blocker come and be on many iOS devices, there is a chance that developers will offer fewer free apps and ask users for money more often.

AdBlock Plus considers the ads to be a nuisance, as they would detract from the user experience, consume bandwidth and drain the battery.

There will be an AdBlock Plus browser for iOS anyway. A first version will be released in a few weeks. An Android version has been around for some time. AdBlock Plus is free for users and makes its money by charging major players in the advertising market for money to show their ads. Google and Microsoft, among others, pay AdBlock Plus.
