Adblock Plus releases Premium plan that blocks site popups and videos
The popular ad blocker Adblock Plus comes with a paid subscription that allows users to block more content on websites. Adblock Plus Premium costs $20 a year and lets users block newsletter popups, videos, and other notifications.
Adblock Plus Premium can be used immediately and costs two dollars per month or twenty dollars per year. The makers say that the tool will receive three new features for the time being in addition to blocking ads and trackers. With a Premium subscription, users can block floating videos, the videos that pop up on a site and stay there. They can also block pop-ups to sign up for a newsletter and users can block all website notifications and pop-ups by default, such as the request to complete a survey.
The makers of the ad blocker write that new features will be added to the Premium subscription in the future. The makers specifically mention cookie banners. Adblock Plus had a similar feature for a while, but says it’s improving it to block more cookie consent popups. That feature is then integrated into the paid subscription. There are already many other browser plug-ins and extensions that can block cookie banners, many of which are available for free.
The creators of the extension say that the ability to block ads will continue to be available for free. The makers do not write why there will be a paid version. Adblock Plus has always run on a voluntary donation model. Such models are often difficult to scale. The creators say that any user who has donated in the past can get the subscription for free, regardless of the amount of their donation. Users can pay for the subscription with PayPal or a credit card.
