Activity tracker Moves adjusts conditions after Facebook takeover

Shortly after its acquisition by Facebook, Moves, a popular activity tracker app, amended its privacy terms to allow the company to share user data with other parties, including Facebook. Earlier, the company promised not to share the data with others.

On April 24, it was announced that Moves had been acquired by Facebook. The makers of the fitness and activity tracker promised that not only would the app continue to exist, but also that user data would not be included in Social Graph, Facebook’s “social search engine.” Nevertheless, Moves has recently amended the privacy terms. It states that user data, including data that can be traced back to a person, may be shared with other parties, including Facebook.

Moves owner Facebook gives contradictory statements to The Verge and the Wall Street Journal about the changed terms of the tracker app. For example, the company states that the Moves databases will remain separate from the Facebook databases, but that there are also plans to share certain data. As the new owner of Moves, Facebook employees would in any case have access to the privacy-sensitive data.

Shortly after Facebook’s acquisition of WhatsApp, the former owners made a similar promise to Moves: WhatsApp would not share user data with the social networking giant and respect the privacy of its users. Nevertheless, millions of WhatsApp users decided to switch to another messaging client.
